From the audio archives: "Why I said yes to Rotary."

Why I said yes to Rotary.

About 19 years ago I joined Rotary. I was recruited by a former AISD principal and didn't really know much about it. I had seen the blue and yellow signs and stickers all over the place, but like a great many people, I had never stopped to inquire what they represented. Soon I learned that the Four-Way Test serves as the direction Rotary clubs should follow, no matter where in the world they are located.

Each club seems to have a different personality on the spectrum of what it can do in support of the Four-Way Test. I decided after several years that the club I had joined was not a good fit. I wanted to contribute not just money for international projects but right here in our community. After much thought and a little coaching from Dan Morales, I switched, hoping that I made the right move. Well ... I did!

Joining Arlington Great Southwest Rotary brought a whole new perspective. This is a club that actually does things that matter as well as give to the Rotary Foundation for global work such as polio eradication. Everyone is involved in one way or another in projects like providing food for hungry kids, awarding scholarships to deserving students and, on the international front, funding wheelchairs for those who need them.

Our club may be small, but we're mighty. When asked by other Rotarians which club I belong to, I am eager to say Great Southwest. At one event I even heard someone (I didn't know a soul) say, "Oh, the little club that does!" I was so proud.

I have personally been assisted and encouraged by so many of you. (I had never been affiliated with a group of people who are like family.) We care about one another, and that's something that's hard to come by these days. I hope to continue being part of this family and doing whatever I can to strengthen our culture of "doing and giving."

Of the things we think, say or do …
1. Is it the truth?
2. Is it fair to all concerned?
3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
